Quick Answer
A safe first major route is Margit and Godrick after Limgrave setup, then Liurnia and Rennala, then Caelid/Radahn when your build is stable, then Altus Plateau and Leyndell. Optional bosses should be treated as power checks, not as required walls.
Practical Major Boss Route
| Stage | Boss target | Why this order works |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Margit, the Fell Omen | Teaches delayed attacks and punishes panic rolls |
| 2 | Godrick the Grafted | First legacy dungeon finish and a good early confidence check |
| 3 | Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon | Unlocks respec and gives casters/build testers a reset point |
| 4 | Starscourge Radahn | Better after more Vigor, weapon upgrades, and map knowledge |
| 5 | Draconic Tree Sentinel / Leyndell route | Tests mounted field combat and capital readiness |
| 6 | Morgott, the Omen King | A major timing and damage check before the late game |
| 7 | Fire Giant | Large arena, awkward camera, and a common late-game wall |
| 8 | Godskin Duo, Maliketh, Gideon, Godfrey, final bosses | The endgame assumes a mature build and upgraded weapon |
Optional Bosses To Delay
| Boss or area | Delay if… | Return when… |
|---|---|---|
| Tree Sentinel | You just left the tutorial | You have Torrent, upgrades, and confidence |
| Crucible Knight | You cannot read delayed swings yet | You have more Vigor and a better punish rhythm |
| Bell Bearing Hunters | You are still learning spacing | You can survive strong melee pressure |
| Dragonbarrow bosses | Your damage feels tiny | You have midgame upgrades and a clear build |
| Mohg | You are rushing only for DLC access | You understand the special pressure and have enough survivability |
| Malenia | You have not finished most late-game fundamentals | You want an optional mastery challenge |
Why Boss Order Is Not Just Level Order
Elden Ring difficulty depends on more than player level. A boss can feel impossible because of:
- low Vigor;
- weak weapon upgrades;
- wrong damage type for your build;
- no ranged option for a specific phase;
- panic rolling delayed attacks;
- refusing to leave and return later.
If a boss kills you in one or two mistakes, check Vigor and flask upgrades first. If the fight lasts too long, check weapon upgrade level and damage stats. If you understand the fight but lose to one move, slow down and identify only that move.
Good Beginner Rule
Use bosses as route signals:
| Signal | Meaning |
|---|---|
| You barely damage the boss | Explore and upgrade weapon |
| You die before learning phase two | Add Vigor, flasks, or defense |
| You can reach the final phase consistently | Stay and refine the fight |
| You are angry after ten blind attempts | Leave, clear a nearby route, and return with a calmer plan |
