Quick Answer

For a first playthrough, pick one main damage style, level Vigor early, upgrade one main weapon, and delay complicated hybrid builds until after Rennala unlocks respec. Weapon upgrade level usually matters more than squeezing a few early damage stat points.

Build Directions

Build directionBest forBeginner note
StrengthBig weapons, shields, stagger pressureSimple and durable, but slower attacks need patience
DexterityFaster weapons, katanas, curved swords, bowsComfortable exploration and good status options
IntelligenceSorceries and magic-scaling weaponsStrong ranged safety, but needs FP and flask planning
FaithIncantations, buffs, fire/lightning optionsFlexible, but can feel scattered without a plan
Arcane / BleedStatus pressure and fast hitsPowerful when supported, weak if you only chase hype weapons
QualityStrength + Dexterity spreadBetter later; early stat spreading can slow progress

Early Stat Priorities

PriorityWhy
VigorMore health gives more learning time per attempt
Minimum weapon requirementsEquip the weapon you actually plan to use
Endurance as neededHelps armor, shields, and stamina-hungry weapons
Main damage statAdd once your weapon and survival are stable
MindImportant for casters and skill-heavy weapons

Weapon Upgrade Rule

Do not upgrade every interesting weapon you find. Decide whether your current weapon uses regular Smithing Stones or Somber Smithing Stones, then focus on that path until you know the weapon is being replaced.

If you keep switching…The problem
Every weapon stays weakUpgrade stones are spread too thin
Bosses take too longYour route is not feeding your main weapon
You cannot compare weapons fairlyA +0 weapon will feel worse than your upgraded tool even if it scales better later

When To Respec

After Rennala, you can respec with Larval Tears. Respec when:

  • your stat spread no longer matches your weapon;
  • you want to switch from melee to caster or from caster to melee;
  • you overleveled a stat that is not helping;
  • you found a weapon that changes your plan completely.

Do not respec just because one boss is hard. First check upgrades, Vigor, talismans, flask mix, and whether the fight is optional.
