Quick Answer
Do not start by memorizing every scout, archer, fast castle, and civilization-specific opening. First, learn one stable Dark Age rhythm: the Town Center keeps making villagers, sheep and boar keep food income moving, wood supports houses and first buildings, and the scout keeps finding sheep, boar, deer, and the enemy direction.
This is not the only build order. It is a baseline that makes the first 8 to 10 minutes repeatable. Once you can reach Feudal Age without idle Town Center time, it becomes much easier to branch into scouts, archers, fast castle, or campaign-specific starts.

First 15 Villagers
| Stage | Villager plan | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Starting 3 | Two build houses, one starts sheep; then all move to sheep | Queue villagers immediately before scouting too much |
| Villagers 4-6 | Stay on sheep | Keep sheep tight under the TC to reduce walking time |
| Villagers 7-10 | Four to wood, build a lumber camp | Wood should cover houses, mill, and first military building |
| Around villager 11 | Prepare the first boar lure | Send a healthy villager and finish the lure under the TC |
| Villagers 12-14 | Keep food flowing through sheep, boar, and berries | Do not let the food line collapse before the Feudal click |
| Villager 15 | Go to berries or adjust to wood | Add food if you are short; add wood if food is stable |
When Is the Feudal Click Safe?
Check the situation instead of staring only at population:
| Check | Good sign | Fix if it is bad |
|---|---|---|
| Town Center idle time | Villagers stayed queued most of Dark Age | Make villagers first; do not pause production just to age faster |
| Housing | One or two houses are ready before the cap hits | Build earlier as soon as space gets low |
| Food flow | Sheep, boar, and berries connect cleanly | Add the mill earlier if sheep and boar timing slip |
| Wood | Enough for houses and the first Feudal plan | Delay greedy buildings if the wood line is late |
| Scouting | Sheep, boar, key resources, and enemy direction are known | Keep the scout moving instead of parking it at home |
For practice, use a stable 21- or 22-population Feudal click. After several clean games with little or no TC idle time, then try faster Feudal openings or greedier Castle routes.
Common Problems
Why Am I Always Late to Feudal?
It is usually not the civilization. The common causes are idle TC time, getting housed, late boar lures, and long food drop-off walks. When you review a replay, ask one question first: did the Town Center stop making villagers for a noticeable stretch?
What Should the Scout Do Early?
Circle your base for sheep and boar, then widen the loop to find gold, stone, wood lines, and the enemy direction. Do not chase one sheep so far that you miss your home resources, but do not leave the scout parked beside the TC either.
Does This Work for Campaigns and Multiplayer?
The habit works in both: keep villagers producing, secure food, and avoid housing yourself. Campaign missions sometimes change resource access, so adapt the assignments. Multiplayer adds pressure, so the same opening may need earlier walls or a faster first military building.
How to Use the Video
Try the written route once, then use the video to check the first 15 villagers. Pause around the first houses, the first boar lure, and the lumber camp/mill timing. Those three moments explain most beginner Dark Age delays.
