Setup Principle
Do not change your entire setup just because one fight looks difficult. During a first playthrough, a stable build usually means one control spell, one panic option, one spirit you can land reliably, and a gourd setup that covers mistakes.
Five Practical Setup Types
| Situation | Goal | Setup idea |
|---|---|---|
| Story progress | Clear safely | Use Immobilize for confirmed output, stable spirits, and survival curios |
| Single boss | Punish windows | Save control for recovery frames and transformation for the dangerous phase |
| Crowd pressure | Avoid being surrounded | Favor faster spirits and area control |
| High survival need | Die less | Prioritize healing effects, status answers, and defensive curios |
| NG+ efficiency | Move quickly | Use stronger damage curios, familiar transformations, and high-hit-rate spirits |
How To Use Immobilize
Immobilize is best as a confirmed punish, not as a fight-opening ritual. Better timings include:
- After a boss finishes a long combo.
- When you can safely land a heavy staff punish.
- Before a dangerous phase transition.
- When you need to reset positioning.
If Immobilize only gives you one weak hit, your timing is probably the problem.
Choosing Transformations
| Problem | Transformation value |
|---|---|
| You die in phase two | Save transformation as an extra health buffer |
| The boss is too fast | Use a familiar transformation instead of a theoretical damage pick |
| Punish windows are short | Choose faster startup and reliable tracking |
| Fire, poison, or status pressure is high | Favor survival and consistency |
Transformations are not just damage. They also create breathing room, reset rhythm, and cover mistakes.
Spirit Selection Logic
The best spirit is the one that actually lands. A powerful spirit that misses every attempt is worse than a simple one that connects during Immobilize or boss recovery.
Check four things:
- Is the startup too slow?
- Does the boss move away before impact?
- Does it land reliably after Immobilize?
- Does it solve the current wall instead of only raising theoretical damage?
Safe Default For New Players
- Use Immobilize as the core control tool.
- Keep a reliable, familiar spirit.
- Choose survival curios first, then shift toward damage.
- Adjust gourds, drinks, and soaks by chapter pressure.
- Save transformation for the phase where you usually lose control.
When To Change Builds
| Signal | Response |
|---|---|
| You die in the same phase every attempt | Change transformation timing or survival tools |
| Spells keep missing | Change timing before rebuilding everything |
| The fight is safe but slow | Add damage curios or a stronger spirit |
| Damage is fine but mistakes kill you | Add healing, defense, or status control |
| NG+ route feels slow | Shift toward efficiency and burst |
